Lewes fireworks
on bonfire night last friday night we went to Lewes - a small town/village near brighton. their fireworks are supposed to be world-famous, the biggest in britain or sthg.. cos apparently guy fawkes and all his gang came from there? or sthg like that neway! they had loads of fireworks displays - we went to a free one in a muddy field behind tescos.. except we got there quite early and it became too muddy and cold to wait for the fireworks to start.. eventually we gave up waiting and jus went to the pub instead! that was a shame i guess.. but we did see them eventually from outside the pub! but i think the most unique thing about Lewes was the parade they have in the street.. LOADS of ppl all dressed up, carryin torches and banners and everything.. wow ppl really do go ALL OUT for it! and they burn all sorts of ppl not jus guy fawkes - like the pope, cos (another bit of historical fact) apparently at one time the pope ordered the burning of loadsa protestant guys in lewes and so nowadays its a sort of get-your-own-back on him.. (yeah i kno, im not giving a very good account of it..) yeah its a bit dodgy im not sure i really liked the sound of that! lewes was so packed that night and the streets got totally trashed.. but we managed to get the train home ok so that was lucky =)
